Make a map
Students can create a map that showcases the maroon landscape in either rural areas or cities, highlighting the networks and options available to maroons that allowed them to hide and practice freedom.
Analyze primary sources
Students can analyze primary sources, such as historical documents, letters, and narratives, to find hints of maroon activity. Frederick Douglass’s My Bondage My Freedom and "Recollections of Slavery by a Runaway Slave" would be a great start.
